Philosophy of care

Cheri is a kind-hearted educator who is passionate about her students and the ECE profession. She strives to make learning experiences equitable, inclusive and engaging for all students in her kindergarten classroom. Throughout the school day, you will see her interacting with her students in a variety of innovative classroom activities that are engaging and meet the individual learning needs of her students.

Support of child development

When you walk into Cheri’s kindergarten class, you will find new and exciting learning happening. The energy in the room is contagious, as students are engaged in various tasks around the room. Cheri supports students while they are involved in interactive hands on learning activities such as drawing and labelling diagrams, crafting, writing, and building. She follows the lead of her students to explore new concepts and constantly expand her teaching. By always trying new things, Cheri is changing how she uses technology to best suit needs of students and parents and making the journey of learning and growing something unforgettable for her students.

Whenever Cheri is faced with a challenge, she always finds a way around it. She continued with classroom routines while learning from home by supporting her students and their families by baking together online. Cheri and her teaching partner also learned about photography so that the kindergarten students could have school photos and zoom technology so that children could give their parents a virtual tour of the classroom.

Involvement with parents, families and the community

Cheri and her teaching partner came up with a solution to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions that limited in-person contact with parents.  A virtual tour was created for parents and students to see the school, their classroom, playground area and how to get to the classroom from their cubie in order alleviate some of the stress. On the first day of school outdoor photo booth was set up so that each student could say “cheese” and have a keepsake photo for the first day of school.

Not only does she manage all of the responsibilities of a busy kindergarten classroom, but she also instills a sense of community in the classroom that extends to the whole school and beyond. On World Kindness Day, as part of literacy lesson, students wrote messages and sent “Christmas bear hugs” to the elderly at one of the local care homes.
