"It is rare to find an educator that has 20+ children in their classroom but yet is personally invested in our son's success and development. … As parents, we feel exceptionally blessed to have had Kevin as part of our son's development at such an integral part of his life."
— Parents

A young educator at the start of his career, Kevin Fowlow takes such pride in the accomplishments of the children in his care that it's infectious. Neither gregarious nor loudly animated, Kevin connects deeply with the children and attracts their attention—often by singing—and respect at all times.

Philosophy of care

Kevin creates the emotional space for every child to form a bond with him at their pace and in their own way, while nurturing and nourishing their minds. By building authentic relationships, he says, educators can help children solve problems while feeling heard, understood and valued.

Support of child development

  • Familiarizes himself with what children care about—the latest toys, movies or television programs, special events in the community—and then develops art projects related to them or creates an environment—a pirate ship or a Tim Hortons' drive-through—to encourage play-based learning.
  • Creates open-ended games and routines so all children can be active participants in their learning and feel comfortable in extending what interests them by exploring new ideas.
  • Fosters self-confidence in shy children by engaging them one-on-one in topics of interest, and then getting them involved, first in small- and then, when they are ready, large-group activities.
  • Remembers and uses the smallest details—such as the nickname a child uses for his each of grandparents—to give children a taste of home while they are at the centre.

Involvement with parents, families and the community

  • Finds something unique about each child to start conversations with them and the important adults in their lives; similarly, he puts parents at ease, including some shy fathers, by engaging them about sports teams, community activities or particular interests.
  • Works both the opening and closing shift at the centre to increase the time he has to interact with parents and siblings during both the before- and after-school portions of the program.
  • Attends the local school's annual "welcome to kindergarten" event so he can meet and answer questions for parents who may wish to enrol their child in the program; gives tours of the centre.
  • Supports strategies parents are using at home to, for example, enhance language development, deter thumb sucking and promote potty training, but also provides feedback and suggestions to parents on how they could make their approaches more effective.
