Barbecue tank exchange programs

Barbecue tank exchange programs (infographic)
Long description of the infographic

How is propane sold through a tank exchange program?

The seller exchanges your empty or partially empty barbecue tank for a tank that is prefilled and marked with the amount of propane it contains.

Refill process

  • The seller fills a batch of tanks and applies a label to each of them showing the net weight, in kilograms, before selling them.
  • The attendant takes your empty or partially empty tank in exchange for one of the prefilled tanks.

Sellers who offer prefilled barbecue tanks through an exchange program aren’t required to use a certified scale. However, each prefilled tank they sell must have a label that clearly shows the weight, in kilograms, of the propane it contains.

If you think you haven't received a full tank or if there is no label showing the tank’s net weight, you can file a complaint with the Competition Bureau at competitionbureau.gc.ca.
