Doubting the accuracy of your electricity meter?

Doubting the accuracy of your electricity meter (the long description is located below the image)
Long description of the infographic

Check your energy usage

Energy usage may increase when:

  • it is warmer or colder than normal
  • appliances are working harder than normal
  • recharging electric cars or tools such as cordless electric lawn mowers

Check your bill

If your electricity bill has increased, it may be due to:

  • the use of appliances at times during the day when rates are higher (time-of-use rates)
  • changes in rates by the provincial energy board

Still have concerns?

Contact your electricity utility and ask them to investigate the source of your concern.

If you still think the meter is not measuring accurately, you may file a complaint with Measurement Canada and ask that the meter be tested. The utility must remove the meter for it to be tested. Check with your utility to see if there is a charge for the removal.
