Calibration of gas flow standards

Gas flow standards belonging to Measurement Canada inspectors and authorized service providers (ASP) are calibrated for use in the field. Calibration services are delivered in accordance with the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act and Regulations.

Only standards used by Measurement Canada inspectors and authorized service providers are calibrated by Measurement Canada's laboratories. Standards and measuring apparatus must be authorized and registered with Measurement Canada to qualify for this service.


Method

  • Rotary meters ranging in size from 1.4 to 65 m3/hr using air and 50 to 2,300 ft3/hr using air are certified in relation to Measurement Canada's 10 ft3 (Level 1) master bell prover.
  • Bell provers with displaced volumes of 2 ft3, 5 ft3, 10 ft3, 20 ft3 and 50 ft3 (Level 2) are dimensionally certified (strapping) using Pi Tape diameter tapes that are traceable to the National Research Council or to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
  • Large rotary meters and turbine meters have their certificate issued by Measurement Canada based on data submitted as per bulletin G-16—Recognition of Test Data From Gas Meter Test Facilities.
  • Model 5 transfer proving systems have their certificate issued by Measurement Canada based on data submitted as per bulletin G-16—Recognition of Test Data From Gas Meter Test Facilities.
  • Gas cylinders have their certificate issued by Measurement Canada based on data submitted as per bulletin G-23—Recognition of Data from Specialty Gas Suppliers and Testing Laboratories.

Calibration location

Some devices are calibrated by Measurement Canada's Approval and Calibration Services Laboratory (ACSL) in Ottawa, Ontario. Others are calibrated by approved third-party laboratories (see bulletin G-16 and bulletin G-23) and the results are verified by the ACSL.
